Introducing  the Memory Maker Pass, your ticket to experiencing all the Magic of the Holiday season here at Neighbor Boy, and along with it, some changes for 2024... We are moving in the direction of creating the premier and most charming old fashioned holiday experience in the Triangle area. Here at Neighbor Boy, it's a vision we have long dreamed of! With the price of trees higher than ever, we believe our customers deserve to have a true, enchanting experience, while still keeping our pricing fair. The time is right for us to do something different to better serve our customers and to ensure our business remains sustainable in the future.
With that said, here are some changes you need to know:

Most of our busiest weekends will now require a reservation. We know this will be a change for many of you, but following the lead of many other tree farms who operate in this same manner, we know it will allow us to better provide the service to everyone that they deserve and expect. No traffic jams or lines to get in, nor guessing about the best time to visit. You'll have your own specific time slot to arrive and enjoy a magical Christmas experience that goes beyond just picking out a tree. The weekends that will require reservations are: November 23/24, November 29/30/December 1, and December 6/7/8. While there may be some reservation spots open to the public or for those who pre-ordered a tree during those weekends, we hope that most of the reservations on those weekends will go to those who hold the optional Memory Maker Pass so that we can give you the merriest Christmas ever. The first round of Memory Maker Passes will go on sale on January 25th (Christmas in January) and those who purchase their pass in this first round will have first access to the reservation system (which will open in the fall). There will be other opportunities to purchase a pass this year, however, prices will go up after this introductory offer. And there are a limited number of passes, since there will only be a limited number of reservations.

What's Included in your Memory Maker Pass, besides a personal reservation for your family? When you drive in, you'll be guided directly to your reserved parking spot. As you step out into Neighbor Boy Farm, you'll be transported into a winter wonderland straight out of a storybook, yet nestled right here in the heart of Apex. Imagine this, the air is crisp, filled with the scent of fraser firs. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff are readily available to assist you in finding your perfect tree whether that's a charming table top or a majestic 11 ft fir! You've found the perfect Christmas tree, and now it's time to unwind by one of the crackling fire pits while you and your family craft the quintessential winter treats, s'mores and roasted marshmallows. That's right... your family will be led through an unforgettable old-fashioned Christmas experience complete with crafts, fire pits, story time, photo ops for your Holiday cards, marshmallow roasting and s'mores, wreath making with your family, and of course, our Apex-famous homemade hot chocolate. You might even catch a glimpse of the Old Jolly man himself or one of his helpers. Plus, you'll want to stop by our play areas and our Country Store filled with local goodness.

Preordering your Christmas tree and Memory Maker Pass for the 2024 season will begin at 8 am on January 25th through February at the 2023 price. We will reopen preordering when we have the 2024 pricing from our farm.

Why the change?
The closer we can get to "nailing our numbers" each year, the better pricing we can offer and the better service we can provide to you. We're not going to lie...this tree business is getting harder and harder and yet we want to continue to be a part of your family's Christmas Traditions. The NC tree farms we work with are now asking for full payment by August. (It used to be November/December) And guys, for full transparency, our full payment to the tree farm last year was well over $100,000. We are a super small family owned business and that's a lot of money to put up from our own pockets each summer without any guarantee that even one tree will sell. Plus, if we add on the costs of hot chocolate, lights, payroll and more, it puts us in a situation where we have to sell more trees than we typically do sell just to cover our expenses. We want to bring you the very best nursery grade Christmas Trees and for a good price, and we also need to be sustainable as a business in order to pay ourselves and feed our kiddos, especially in this economy. The best and only way we can do this is if the majority of our customers preorder their trees. When we never know how many we'll sell, sometimes we sell out very early which isn't smart for our business or helpful to our customers. Other times we are left with $10,000-$30,000 worth of trees left on our lot and nothing we can do with them after Christmas, which is a huge loss for our business and our family.

How Does This Help Our Customers?
If you shop right now, during our limited time offer of preordering at our 2023 prices, most of you will be able to preorder your tree AND purchase the Memory Maker Pass for the same price or less than purchasing a tree directly on the tree lot last year. In addition, you'll be able to enjoy our farm without all the hustle and bustle, waiting in line, missing out on the "best" trees, and you'll have the opportunity to experience even more family fun for the same cost to you. It's a Win Win.

We will probably add to this as our customers ask questions.

Do we have to buy a Memory Maker Pass?  No, but those with the pass will have first access to premium times on our reservation system for the first three weekends we are open. Those who preordered will have second access to the reservation system.

Do we have to purchase a pass for each person in our family or group? No, it is one pass per car.

Do we have to preorder a tree? No, but those who have preordered will have the second wave of access to the premium weekend times in our reservation system. Plus, you'll save lots of money on your tree!! For example, our 2023 preorder price on 7-8 ft trees was at LEAST $40 less than the lot prices, depending upon the tree. So, why wouldn't you preorder?

We usually purchase a tree size that isn't on the preorder list. How can we participate? That's about to change. ALL of our tree sizes will be available for preorder as we have worked with our farm to assure us availability.

Do we still get to choose our tree if we preorder? Yes, nothing has changed. You still get to choose the exact perfect tree for your family.

What hours will you be open for the general public or if we don't want to come on a weekend? This is yet to be determined, and is based on how many trees are preordered and how many Memory Maker Passes are sold. After a very exhausting 2023 for our family, we will limit our hours to some degree. We'll determine our general public 2024 hours late summer or early fall.

How does preselling trees for less money actually save Neighbor Boy money and help them be sustainable? It's complicated, but... Nailing our numbers on how many trees to order helps us save money by not having $10-30,000 in losses (in trees) per year and helps us better plan our tree delivery schedule, employees schedules and even how much hot chocolate ingredients to buy. It helps us plan for all the other expenses of running the business so that we can better plan each season. And when you are providing 5000+ cups of complimentary hot chocolate in a month, knowing those numbers really makes a difference.

Do we have to buy a tree to enjoy this holiday experience? Will the Memory Maker Passes be sold separately?  Maybe. We would like to offer the pass to those who aren't buying trees, but it will depend on how many people purchase the pass with their trees, as there are only so many spaces available per day, per weekend.

What if we just want to purchase a wreath or garland? Or what if we just want to shop in the gift shop?  We will have wreaths and garland for sale in our front Cash and Carry Stand on the weekends, and you can also stop by and shop during our general public hours that won't require reservations.

Will you still be offering fundraisers and donating trees to families in need? Yes, of course. We are truly passionate about giving back to our community.

More About Us...
Happy Birthday, Jesus!

The Christmas Experience

Jesus truly is the reason for the season. At Neighbor Boy, it's not just about choosing a beautiful Christmas tree, but about the real spirit of Christmas. We invite you and your family to slow down and take a break from the busy holiday season to dance to the holiday music among our trees and consider the true meaning of Christmas.
Free Hot Chocolate

Our Hot Chocolate Tradition

Everyone who comes to visit the Neighbor Boy Christmas Tree Lot is offered a complimentary cup of hot chocolate. It's our sweet gift to you! The hot chocolate is a delicious, homemade cocoa....Dave's own secret recipe. But, for those who wonder how it's made, it's simply the perfect mix of Hershey's cocoa, sugar, and dried milk. We top it off with marshmallows for the kiddos and whipped cream and peppermint for the adults. Of course, anyone can ask for whichever they prefer. You can even ask for a second cup! The tradition started almost 20 years ago when Dave walked out to the Christmas Tree lot with a mug of hot chocolate and a customer asked, "hey, where's ours?" He ran back in and prepared them each a mug, and the tradition was born!
Kylan's Kid Corner

Kylan's Kid Corner and our Play Areas

"We don't stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing." Throughout our farm there are several areas for children to play. From slides to toys, a climbing wall, a small ball pit, music walls, sidewalk chalk, cornhole and more! Please enjoy and join in. We ask that all young children be supervised.
Fresh Fraser Wreaths

Make or Purchase a Wreath

We make our wreaths here on site, so they are always fresh. We'd love to teach you or your children how to make your own wreath. The wreath making stands are back by the tree service station near the parking lot. Feel free to stop by if you'd like to learn how to make a wreath.
Finding the perfect tree!

Choosing the Perfect Tree

We've seen families spend hours pondering the perfect tree. Tall, short, fat, thin, many branches, few branches...  Our Christmas trees are NC grown fraser fir trees, freshly cut and delivered throughout the season. They are graded at the farm in Ashe County according to USDA standards, and may be graded as Premium, #1, or #2. The grading of the trees does not affect the health or freshness of the tree, but pertains to shape, branch density, taper, etc. Each Neighbor Boy tree is priced based on height and grading, and you can find the price on the tree tag. Once your family finds the perfect tree, please tear off the bottom half of the tag so no one else can select it, and take the tag to the cashier to pay for your tree.
Neighbor Boy Country Store

Visit the Neighbor Boy Country Store

One of the highlights of our farm is our Country Store. We offer a variety of local gifts and unique goodness, from candles and soaps to jams and sauces, crafts and ornaments, gifts and stocking stuffers for everyone. When you take your tree tag to the cashier to pay, we encourage you to take a few minutes to browse our store. In addition to gifts, we also stock local eggs, meat, and honey! And wreaths, garland, and holiday decor.
Carry your tree to the service area.

Carry your tree to the Service Area.

Once you've paid for your tree, take your receipt and go back out and find your tree. Do all the trees look alike? No problem. The number on your receipt will match the number on the top half of the tag still on your tree.  If you'd like to, we encourage you and your family to get involved in the experience and pick up your tree and carry it over to the service area in the back near the parking lot. If you'd prefer, you can find an employee (in a red shirt) to carry it over for you.
Let's get your tree ready!

The Tree Service Area

Now we will get your tree display ready!! If you have your stand, bring it over with you and we will help put it on for you. Don't have a stand? Don't worry, you can purchase one of ours. We give every tree a fresh cut so it will pull up water and stay fresh. We'll cut it for you, or you are welcome to request to cut it yourself. We can also trim up a few branches so it fits nicely in the stand. Next, it's time to shake the tree. We love our tree shakers because it gives the children a chance to dance with their Christmas Tree! We encourage you and your family to step over and help with the shaking! The shaking also helps loosen up the branches, get rid of old needles, and shake out any debris.
Take your tree home.

Let's Tie the Tree On the Car

And now it's time to tie your tree on your car so that you can get it home safely! The tree tying is a very important part so that it stays on your car and no one gets hurt! We provide twine and will tie the tree for you. We welcome you to jump in and help! Once you get your tree home, please start watering it right away, and don't ever let the bowl dry out. That's the secret to keeping your tree fresh all season long.

We welcome well-behaved dogs! Please make sure your dog is leashed at all times and that you keep them in control and near your family. Not all dogs are kid friendly when out of their comfort zone, and we know that not all kids are dog friendly either. Please clean up after your pet. Thank you!
We provide Premium trees.

What is a Premium, Nursery Grade Tree?

We offer a variety of trees from Table Top up to almost 12 ft tall! Our trees are grown in Ashe County, NC by the Shatley family, who have been in the tree farming business for decades. Our top quality fraser trees are nursery grade, USDA premium and #1 trees. (more info can be found through the USDA website and the American Nursery and Landscape Association website) We also have a very limited number of #2 trees for variety and for those who prefer thinner or less dense trees. The USDA grades generally provide more info about fullness, density, pruning, etc. What does this mean for you? It means that you are supporting our family farm and the Shatley's family farm that both pay their employees fare wages, use ethical and the cleanest pest control and fertilization practices, and abide by the strict standards set forth by both organizations.  We also receive several fresh cut deliveries per season so you are always receiving the freshest trees available.
